Hello, genealogy friends and SLIG family!
We know it’s been quiet around here—almost a year, to be honest. While our blog took a pause, the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy certainly didn’t. We’ve been hard at work perfecting something we’re incredibly excited to share with you: a virtual institute experience that brings SLIG’s world-class education right to your home office, kitchen table, or wherever you do your best genealogical thinking.
What We’ve Been Up To
The past year has been transformative for genealogy education. New DNA tools have emerged, millions of records have been digitized, and AI has started revolutionizing how we approach research challenges. Meanwhile, we’ve been listening to our community, refining our virtual platform, and developing new ways to deliver the intensive, hands-on learning experience SLIG is known for—all from the comfort of your own space.
Our incredible instructors have been busy too, updating course materials with the latest methodologies and adapting their teaching styles to make virtual learning just as engaging and effective as our in-person sessions. We’re also thrilled to welcome a new instructor to the SLIG family, who has designed an innovative course exploring the development of communication methods throughout history—a fascinating lens for understanding how our ancestors connected, shared information, and left the traces we follow in our research today.
Why We’re Back (And Why Now Matters)
This blog isn’t just returning—it’s evolving. Yes, we’ll continue spotlighting our amazing courses and giving you insider previews of what makes each SLIG track special. But we’re also here to tackle something we’ve learned is just as important: how to actually succeed during a week of intensive genealogy education.
Because here’s what we’ve discovered: knowing which course to take is only half the battle. The other half? Managing your energy, keeping your family fed, staying physically comfortable during long study sessions, and maintaining your sanity while your brain absorbs years’ worth of genealogical knowledge in just five days.
What’s Coming
Over the next few weeks, you can expect:
- Course spotlights featuring our incredible instructors and what makes their teaching approach unique
- Student success stories that will inspire your own genealogical breakthroughs
- Virtual Institute survival guides covering everything from optimal lighting setups to brain-boosting snacks
- Practical life hacks for balancing intensive study with work, family, and daily responsibilities
- Behind-the-scenes insights into how SLIG courses are developed and updated
A Personal Note
Whether you’re a SLIG veteran or hearing about us for the first time, we want this blog to feel like sitting down with a friend who’s “been there”—someone who understands that successful genealogy education isn’t just about the coursework. It’s about creating conditions where you can learn, grow, and make those breakthrough discoveries that make all the late-night research sessions worth it.
We’re genuinely excited to be back in conversation with you. The genealogy community has always been about sharing knowledge, supporting each other’s research journeys, and celebrating those “aha!” moments together. This blog is our way of extending that community spirit beyond the institute.
